I'll make a new post over at Blazing Translations with my email on it.

I'm wondering, why don't you just try using a google doc to arrange who does what chapter between yourselves? Just a little idea from me.

    1. Um...I kinda do the same thing when I translate. The point is, while I'm kinda doing it for the story, I'm also using it to improve my Japanese. That, and I don't really have the time to spend editing all that bulk at once. Also, considering how enthusiastic other people are in doing this, I kinda want to share it with them. (By the way, I'm not at the head of this project so I don't really have a say in the matter.)

    1. Well, I'm an amateur in translation as well though here's what I usually keep in mind:
      1. Translate by context, not by literal words. As long as the meaning comes across, then its all good.
      2. Try and incorporate as many 'language specific terms' as possible. For example, I often leave sound effects and expressions as is.
      3. There is no absolute translation. As people can interpret things differently, there will be variations between translations and thus no translation that is 100% perfect.

With that said, Good Luck. When in doubt, consult Mr. Google Translate.

"Konjiki no Moji Tsukai – Chapter 75: The Apology of the Maid
It already three days passed since I came to this place. My relationship with Silva and Shamoe is deepen a little, but I have not even have any encounter with Lilith at all. She seems to shut herself in her own room as her butler, Silva, carries foods to her room all the time.
I express my dissatisfaction while listen to the rain that it does not appear to have any sign of stopping while having a meal in silence because there is no helping it"

I had taken Japanese in college for half a semester, but wow, it took me half an hour just for 2 paragraph (god damn so many kanjis >:( ). Sorry for not being unable to help out and thank you for translate this project. You guys are awesome.

Nice job considering you only studied for half a semester. I don't know whether it will be helpful for the translation, but it's really nice to see some people enthusiastic about learning the language.

      @Rochim Ivanka Aguste
I know what you mean. My school didn't offer Japanese as a subject. It was only by pure chance that I was able to find a suitable tutor to teach me the language. There's probably several resources online if you want to learn the language (and are willing to put in the effort).

      @killerwakka1
There's several times that I've thought that as well. However, in my opinion, if we only had one singular language, we'd lose all the qualities that other language possess and, possibly as a result of said lost qualities, their wonderfully rich and diverse culture. Of course, that's just my opinion.

    1. I'm not exactly sure how to answer your question. Heck, I'm not even sure how our team grew this big.
Let me just give you a run down.
We're not looking for translators. That said, we're not rejecting them. We just keep outputting translations and, those that wish to join the project, come and approach us.
Although I'm not sure about your translation, I think that the new translators were attracted by the story as well as the fact that its a WN. That means that they can use MT tools to assist in their translation (like I do).
Also, as our team has an editor (...me and/or dal), there's a chance for them to learn as they will be able to identify their mistakes.
Now, the second half of this is only my hypothesis...however, perhaps you may want to simply keep translating and wait for people to come to you?
      Good luck with your recruitment.

  51. I know i'm not in a position to say this but could i make i small suggestion? From what i can see, there is a large team of TLs but very little uniformity in the releases. It's like one TLs takes one chapter, takes as long as he likes with it and release it whenever. Also there are chapter gaps where no one is assigned a chapter like in the case of 86 and now 91 (i think?).

Therefore, i think the TL team should assign a chapter each to one TL on a certain day (ie Monday) and release it a week later (ie Sunday?) That way there will be a fixed release date (Sunday) and the TLs have 6~7 days to work on their chapter. This will eliminate the chapter gaps we all see so frequently and people like me do not have to refresh every few hours to hope for a release. Also, we as the readers will be able to see 5~9 chapters per week if we're lucky on Sunday.

Idk just a suggestion. If you think it's unethical, feel free to ignore this comment as i'm satisfied with what you guys are already doing. Just saying that there is a better way around it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you for taking the time to voice your suggestion. I will keep it in mind for the future.

I hope you don't mind but I will currently explain why we do not run on a schedule basis.

As all of our Real Life counterparts are very busy, it is very hard for any of us to follow a schedule.

Even if we were to implement scheduled releases, there would be no guarantee that we will be able to finish it on time.

Me in particular, as I edit most of the works, am currently being swamped with RL obligations, thus NetBlazer seems to be taking some of my workload (thanks, NB).

Thus, we have the current format of people reserving/translating whenever they want. 86 was a special case scenario brought upon by me (read post 'My Apologies'). 91 is currently reserved by NB.

Now, I'm not saying that your suggestion is bad. If anything, I think it's very sound. But please understand that I don't want to stress others out by forcing them to output a release on a certain day.

Either way, I hope you continue to follow the series. (IMO) It only gets better from here.

      Delete
    2. Yes i understand why you as freelance translators do not want a schedule as RL commitments would come knocking on the door. As a further explanation on what i meant on the reserving, i meant on that particular week, the translators who feel that they can manage a chapter could reserve and translate it. This way even if half the translators do not want to translate on a particular week, we could have 4~5 releases on Sunday. This gives you guys the same freedom of choice and a long time-period to translate (6~7 days) which i doubt would be extremely stressful.

From what i see, translators such as NB, YR, Elysion and you would be capable of performing one chapter per week easily. Even if new translators have trouble, they could seek help from the google drive that you already have. Also, if you have commitments that week, you could always just pass on translating that week.

As for editing, it seems that you are the one taking all the fire, I am unsure if you are a primary editor or translator, but i recommend that you look for another editor. Pretty sure multiple people would sign on thus reducing your workload.

Again, i'm not saying that i won't discontinue liking Konjiki just because the translators are swamped. I'm just saying the way the management is will only burn out not only the translators, but also the readers since we have a lack of uniformity in releases.

      Delete
    3. Ok. I think I understand what you mean now.
From what I can tell, I don't see how that's much different from what we're doing. Unless you are suggesting that we all release the chapters on one day.

Of course, we have discussed this between ourselves and have designated NB's blog to be the one readers should turn to should they wish for such an update (as NB posts chronologically).

Yeah, I should really get another editor on the team. We do have Dalmenuis and NB has joined the editing ranks for now. The problem is looking for an editor that can understand Jap as the translators are not always accurate in the translation.

What I suggest you do, if you're looking for uniformity, is to follow NB's blog. I agree that we are not all united (cause it's more of a collaboration as opposed to a team) but we are still trying to bring a decent amount of quality to this project as we all love the story so much.

Thank you for taking the time to elaborate on your suggestion. I'll bring it up with the others and see what they have to say.

    4. I thank you for considering my suggestion.

Just one last thing to add. How it will be different from what you guys are currently doing is that there will no longer be chapter gaps (like in the case of 86), readers would only need to come back once a week, and those that want uniformity won't be tempted to read ahead like what i did whenever i see a new update here. I mean its like skipping breakfast cuz we are curious what's for lunch and we have to wait another day for breakfast the previous day (not a very good analogy just bear with me).

    5. Sorry, I'm having trouble grasping what you mean. Are you suggesting that we reserve a chapter when we think we can do it? Because that is what we have been doing.

In the case of 86, it was my fault as I skipped ahead due to commitments. Then Caps reserved it so everyone else just went a head.

We currently have the format of translating whenever a chapter is done. Are you suggesting that we wait until all the chapters have been caught up? If that's the case, as I've said, you should probably follow NB's blog. He doesn't have chapter gaps, as opposed to the rest of us (although you'll have to wait for the chapter gap to be filled).

And, I apologize, but I cannot control your temptations. I do not think that we should change our way of doing things because people are unable to restrain themselves.

With regards to your analogy, it makes perfect sense to me. (well, clunky format aside.)

      Thanks for clearing things up.

    6. I'm sorry i think i confused you there.

What i meant is you reserve a chapter at the start of the week (Monday) and those who want to translate that week (Let's say 5 translators) choose between the next 5 chapters. For example, if there are 5 translators on this week, they would choose from 91~95 and release it all on a fixed day (Sunday). Basically what you guys are already doing but in a more managable way (since there seems to be alot of confusion going on).

And i do not mind reading ahead but there are times that reading it wouldn't make sense since one chapter is missing. But more importantly, my suggestion is made so that you guys as a TL team can better coordinate your releases for the benefit of making your lives a little easier. You would have a long time period to translate and you can handle your commitments whenever you want without confusing us when the translation will come out (since there is a fixed day).

This is just a suggestion on how the translation team could be better managed so you don't have to do exactly as suggested. If you find one part which is helpful, i would be glad to be of service since i'm someone who waited since unlimitednovelfailures dropped it and i do not mind if you want to continue translating this way.

  57. I'm one guy with this lonely idea of translating your translations to my native language. Is it possible for me to use your work for this? It would be like RAW -> English -> Polish translations. It could be useful for practicing my English and i could release it on google drive (like Overlord).

    1. I should actually answer this in the FAQ...
Yeah. It's fine. Just give credit where credit is due. You might want to ask the other TLs/Editors as well. As long as you have their permission, I have no issue with it. Have fun.

    2. One more thing, the only concern that I would have is the accuracy of the trans as certain nuances/details can get lost after several translations. Still, if you're passionate about it, then go for it.

    3. I know what you are talking about. In my lifetime experience with the English language i came to understand that many texts are hard to translate to your native language. When i wanted to understand some texts i needed to search some culture facts or histories. And as you may know already it is really hard to translate Japanese puns and gags to English. It is really hard to get 100% accuracy while translating but nevertheless we are still trying.

  58. sorry, just 2 small questions. may come off a bit rude, not intended.

when new translators join in and claim a chapter or 2 to contribute. do they need to at least show they can translate first?
and when the chapter gets labeled something like "awaiting editing", has anyone actually seen the unedited version at this stage?

    1. I don't mind the forwardness.
Actual, NetBlazer should probably be answering these but I'll try and give you the info that you want.
Often, new translators need to show an adequate level of Japanese Comprehension. This is usually done by stating past experience with the Japanese and English language. Usually, they're not meant to claim chapters before they've asked to join the project, but...well, there's no 'rule sheet' to abide by so it can't be helped.
When we say 'awaiting edit', it often means that the chapter, in its current state, is not ready for viewing. While most of us often withhold our chapters until quality control is finished, some don't (often EL). Again, no set rules. More of a 'norm' that we try to adhere to.
Often, you can see the progress of a chapter in 'progress report'. While I cannot update it all the time, I try to, at the very least, update it once a day.

  62. Hey I comented here earlier and I would like to help translating this novel, I got a few days of the week that i will not have to work form now on so...
If I could I would like to know where to look for the Raw chapters and which chapters are available.
Just one question, this is my first time trying translating japanese, and i have no knowledge of japanese, do you guys use translating tools ?

    1. @Marcolla
Available chapters can be seen in the progress report. The raw chapters are in the website (look up).
With regards to TL tools, refer to the FAQ.
If you have no knowledge in Japanese whatsoever, you may want to look up some grammar tips or other Jap teaching tools. TL involves reading the text -> interpreting text -> converting the text -> writing the text in new language. I'm simplifying massively, but I suggest that you have some sort of grasp on the Japanese language.

    2. well this forced me to write it twice...

if you ever get the free time, can you make a small how to guide on how to learn?
the issue that pops up more often than not is any collection of how to learn is just an info dump with no real way to tell heads from toes. the other issue that i run into when i get the will to try to learn is that no one ever wants to teach you how to read they all want to only base it off of speech and only teach you what you would use if you ever went to japan...

      Delete
    3. Hmm...I see your point.
I'm not sure how others would take this approach. I would begin with learning grammar by tackling sentence structure in Jap. (Eg. Subject - particle - verb) < not entirely accurate.
Following this, I would then suggest you learn particles and how they are used (and for what purpose). I'm massively simplifying at the moment because I don't have the time.
I'll think about making a how-to about it later. I have my hands tied right now so I don't have time to spare.
Please be aware that, if I do make a 'how-to', it may not be accurate as I am also studying. I have no credentials in teaching at all (well, language-wise anyway).

    4. no worries, and i dont expect it anytime soon.
what i always have the most problems with is, and this is going to sound dumb, i don't know how to figure out where one word ends and another begins, if i got that much i could probably bruteforce the learning through sheer "if i dont translate this no one else will" but the moment i try to figure this out or ask anyone who "knows" (i don't know if they do or dont, its the internet) i'm usually met with either a middle finger or never being able to find that information.
thanks for considering the how to in the future...
